World Market Brief |
Inventories are indicated as high in North America and Europe. Spot prices are adjusting down, but are not yet in a rapid decline. An outline of scheduled shutdowns shows the strongest drawdown in March/April. The impact of the total volumes lost is just beginning to be written off. Consumers have countered by scheduling derivative maintenance in the same period. The lost methanol volumes could slow the spot price drop, with new suppliers potentially offsetting, once the market enters the second quarter. |

US Natural Gas Contract Price for February 2007 (Alert) |
With the recent recovery in colder weather patterns, US energy values have strengthened over the last weeks. However, the US FERC Houston Ship Channel natural gas index for February was posted at $6.86 USD/MMBtu, an increase of $1.12 USD from January's index. A large winter storm across the northern tier of the US drove current gas demand and pricing higher. As of close of business on 14 February, the cash Henry Hub spot gas price was $8.91 USD/MMBtu. Forward Nymex natural gas price was up, with April, May and June values closing at $7.308, $7.397 and $7.494 USD/MMBtu, respectively. According to data for the week of 2 February, the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed that gas stocks have reached a level below that posted last year. A strong drop for the week ending 9 February brought stocks to 2088 billion cubic feet (Bcf), a level that is still nearly 15% above the 5-year average. |

US Natural Gas Contract Price for February 2007 (Report) |
The recent spell of cold and stormy weather experienced in much of the US has boosted energy prices over the past few weeks. Because of its time of fixture though, the US FERC Houston Ship Channel natural gas index for February seems somewhat low at $6.86 USD/MMBtu, this despite being up $1.12 USD from January. Since that time, natural gas fixtures have held a further $1.00+ USD/MMBtu premium. The cold weather is helping draw down natural gas inventory stock levels. As of the week ending 16 February 2007, the US EIA reported stock levels of 1865 Bcf, now only 10.8% above the 5-year average. Cash spot Henry Hub natural gas closed on 26 February at $7.73 USD/MMBtu. Also on 26 February, Nymex natural gas prices closed at $7.703, $7.784 and $7.868 USD/MMBtu for the months of April, May and June, respectively. |

In his weekly radio address, Venezuela President Hugo Chavez recently detailed his intentions to nationalize all Orinoco River oil projects by 1 May 2007. Under the President's decree, state-owned Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) will acquire a minimum of 60% control in four projects currently led by foreign companies, namely BP, Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Statoil. It is not yet known how the foreign companies will be compensated for the reductions in their stakes. Once this plan is complete, all of Venezuela's oil production will be nationalized. |
